Rebuttal.
This is an excerpt from an email I received regarding my last post. It was sent to me from someone I went to college with about five years ago. I guess you’ll be able to tell it’s from a woman I went to college with. It is copy and pasted exactly, word-for-word from the email.
“It really is amazing you would turn on your own kind. As if we don’t have enough prejudices and follies against us.”
I worry about the world. I watch as people debate whether or not Obama is Muslim, which he’s not, which it shouldn’t matter if he was. I worry that people care that two men or two women, who definitely have a better relationship than I’ve ever had or any of the people who’ve been on The Bachelorette have ever had, want to get married. And I worry about the idea that someone viewed my post about judging ridiculous behavior by and large as ridiculous as turning against my own kind and promoting follies.
One, dear woman, I never ever promote “Follies.” I find that musical tedious and over-celebrated to be honest. Sondheim has produced higher quality work than that bombardment of extravaganza.
Two, the point was that both buying a sports car and taking a $70,000 trip around the world to “find yourself” is ridiculous. Besides, most people will never find themselves, especially not through buying a car or a trip, because most human beings by and large are unwilling to admit and own up to their greatest flaw, keeping them from enlightenment . Like for instance, I will never understand that my fear of being liked will keep me from pursuing what I really believe in.
Three, I first and foremost identify myself as a human being — viewing myself on an even plane with anyone else who walks down the street, man, woman, in betweeners, — which I’m pretty sure is feminism 101. I also believe Humanity 101. Possibly Biology 101 and Archeology 101. Turning on my own kind would have been saying “Bears have got it right. Humans are stupid.” Though I kind of do believe that. So maybe you do have me there.
Four, email one of your representatives about the other two worries I brought up before. Make it your cause to have people stop talking about whether or not our President is Muslim and start talking about why it goes against the very core of our nation to discriminate on the basis of race, religion or sexual orientation. That’s probably more worth your time and than emailing me and saying that I’m traitor to women. I already knew that. Just ask my mother. I never ever wanted to wear dresses growing up.
Five, just forget everything I said and like me. Please like me!
